It's A Famiy Affair - Yuri's Fun Run 5K

It is truly a family affair when you sign everyone up for a race... and no one gets to ride in a stroller this time!  The kids were excited... but I think they didn't truly realize the distance they would be covering.  It was the first race in a long while for Victor, but he seemed excited to race, or maybe just happy we didn't have to share stroller pushing duties anymore.

 April 2013

I am not a morning person, but I am also the weirdo who likes to arrive early and just sit for a bit to wake up and get in race mode.  Doing that with family in tow would make for a VERY different kind of race morning.  The plan was to prep everything the night before so that all we had to do was get everyone up, dressed, and in the car.  They could eat breakfast in the car.  We turned the house upside down for race belts, set out clothes, shoes, and socks, water belts & nutrition, and then shuffled kids off to bed in preparation for the very early alarm.

Race morning... everyone up and dressed with bib numbers in place and snacks for pre and post race for the kids.  We loaded up and headed to the start with a pit stop to pick up my run buddy Marla.  Before every race, we have the same conversation... "Why are we doing this?" We tow ourselves through the pre race routine... port o potty, stretch a little, directions for kids meet up point, port o potty again... race starting line.  We all seeded ourselves towards the middle of the back of the pack... faster than the walkers, slower than the sprinters.

3... 2 ... 1 ... GO!

The kids took off the fastest.  My boys can run... and they are pretty fast when they want to be.  Today, they wanted to beat me to the finish line, but they neglected to do one thing. PACE themselves.  The adults had pacing strategies in place... stick to the intervals, hydrate, and lastly HAVE FUN!  I caught up with the kids after they threw some smack talk my way via their swim coach.  I passed them at about the two mile mark... both boys tried to hang with Marla and I as we passed them (steady paced), but they were spent from speeding out of the start!  We finished in under 39:00 minutes and there is work to do on that time, but I am happy with it.  It was faster than the first 5K of the series... and YES, I did beat the kiddos to the finish line.  NO PR for me... but I did get to see the kids finish the race.

Tyler finished about 1:30 behind me.  Ben was about 3 minutes back behind him.  Victor was the sweeper to make sure everyone made it back to the finish line.

All in all, it was a successful weekend of fun.  We had a VERY busy Saturday.  The 5K, Easter Egg Hunts, two birthday parties, and finally we were back to bed after a very busy day.

Sunday morning... Apparently the race was fun for everyone because the request has been put in for another 5k in the next month or so.  Time to start searching the local run events to see which one fits our schedule!
